So You Want To Be A Mermaid...

After I saw the latest Pirates of the Caribbean movie, the major thing that stuck out in my mind (besides the hot new missionary, "Philip") was the introduction of mermaids into the film.  I don't know why there weren't mermaids in any of the previous films - mermaids luring sailors to their death seems like a significant theme from that time period.

Astrid Berges-Frisbey as the mermaid Syrena
Sam Clafin as the missionary Philip Swift

Gemma Ward as a mermaid luring a sailor into the water to his demise.

The mermaids were so beautiful in this film... They had this ethereal, glowing beauty that just radiated from their skin.  I think the producers made a good decision in keeping the mermaids so stunningly beautiful until right before they catch their prey - you could believe that a sailor would be mesmerized by them and want to follow them into the water.

As soon as the sailor is almost overboard and it is too late for him to escape, the mermaid turns into a predator - her eyes change, and her mouth appears animalistic.  This is when she pulls the sailor to the bottom of the ocean.

So... While I was out shopping the next day, I found a few pieces of jewelry that seemed reminiscent of mermaids or pirates.  I think these pieces are perfect for Summer, as they give a beachy, slightly bohemian feel when piled on.

Turquoise & Palm Tree Thread Necklaces - Juicy Couture
Semi Precious Stone & Gold Bead Bracelets - Lucky Brand
Gold Conch Shell Ring - Lucky Brand (Click HERE)
Coral & Seed Pearl Earrings - Lucky Brand (Click HERE)

Silver Stone & Pearl Necklace - Lucky Brand
Set of 3 Silver Stone & Pearl Bangle Bracelets - Lucky Brand
Leather Charm Bracelet w/ Turquoise & Pearl - Lucky Brand (Click HERE)

I love this charm bracelet by Lucky Brand... The knots and leather material give it a rough, beachy feel... It has both silver and gold charms on it... And the turquoise and pearl accents add interest and color.  If I were to buy one of these pieces, this would probably be it... Then I would layer it with other gold, silver, and raffia bracelets.

This long, gold, coral branch ring is so pretty on... It makes your finger look really long and delicate.   I actually picked this up for an outfit I was styling for my mom... I put it with burnished gold earrings and some big cuff bracelets for her to wear with a maxi dress.  (Click HERE.)

Basically, if you want to get this mermaid/beachy/tropical look for Summer, all you have to do is think of things you would find on a beach... Stones, seashells, coral, bits of leather or wood.  Very natural items.  You can always mix in a big coral or turquoise chandelier earring... Maybe something that would wash up on shore and looks slightly distressed or vintage.  Keep your hair and makeup natural, and give yourself a spray tan for a bronzed glow.  Instant beach goddess!!  :)

BY THE WAY... EVERYTHING on the Lucky Brand website is 20% off right now!!  Visit Lucky's website HERE - but HURRY!!  This offer ends tomorrow.
Hope you all had a fabulous and safe Memorial Day weekend!!  I'm so sorry I've been MIA lately... We spent a day driving up to my parents' lodge, I was sick for a few days, and I didn't pack my cord to connect my camera to my computer!!  But I'm feeling much better, and I'm able to use my mom's camera cord so I can upload photos and videos!!  :)

Style Inspiration: Rachel Zoe

If you admire Rachel Zoe's impeccable boho-chic/70's-glam style as much as I do, you are probably equally obsessed with the way Ms. Zoe carries her fabulous style through to every season... No matter if she's layering fur over silk blouses in the fall, or rocking floaty sundresses in the summer, RZ always embodies bohemian in a way that nobody else has mastered.

Winter Zoe!!

Summer Zoe!!

What I like most about Ms. Zoe is her ability to make bohemian look appropriate for evening or more dressy occasions, which is not an easy task.  The "boho-chic" look, by its very nature, often appears casual: layers, thin fabrics, beaded jewelry, bangle bracelets, feathers as accessories.  But, by starting with a solid bright color and adding a few pieces of eye-catching jewelry, Rachel never fails to stand out at evening events.

Inspired by the iconic Ms. Zoe, here is my take on a boho-chic look for evening... This dress could also be paired with flat sandals and big sunglasses for daytime!!

For The Scrapbookers...

I know there are a few? several? a lot?? of my blog readers who enjoy scrapbooking... So I thought I would do a post on one of my new favorites, just in case you haven't heard about it yet!!

When I was home with my family, my mom gave me one of these "Clip It Up" scrapbooking organizers.  She heard about this organizer from one of her friends, and she purchased it on overstock.com.

The organizer comes in a flat box and requires assembly, which takes only a minute.  You can use the clips to hang embellishments, crystals, letters, or any other scrapbooking materials you can think of.  The organizer comes with tabs and blank labels you can use to divide and label all your materials.  It's so much easier to find what you're looking for when working on a page layout - you just spin the wheel, and all your embellishments are within reach!!

I had a lot of embellishments stuffed away in drawers and boxes, which made them really difficult to find and use!!  Now they're organized by category (Ex. Places, Activities, Christmas, Birthday, Love, Girly) and are more likely to be used.

When I searched for Clip It Up online I found it on the Simply Renee website.  The website also offers an upper arm to store even more materials, mini and jumbo-sized Clip It Up's, and extra clips and labels.  The Simply Renee website carries some other scrapbooking/craft organization tools as well...

A Clip It Up rod to utilize space underneath shelves and cabinets.

A wall-mounted Clip It Up rod to organize ribbons.
(Shown here with the extra attachment arm highlighted)

I know not all of you are into scrapbooking, but I am always looking for ways to better organize and simplify my life, so I thought you might too!!

Spring Deep-Cleaning... The New Therapy?!

If you follow me on Twitter, you are probably well aware that on Tuesday night I came back home after a couple weeks with my family.  As per usual, I had stuffed my car to the point of bending metal with all the "necessities" I thought I might need during my 2-week stint at home with the fam'... (Note to self: you do NOT need a yoga mat to visit the fam for 2 weeks)... So, when I came back home I had an insanely large pile of detritus sitting at the bottom of my stairs.  We all know that's just what everyone wants to deal with after a 3-hour drive!!

Then inspiration/motivation hit me.  I would check one of those little "Summer to-do's" off my list... I would clean out my bathroom while 80% of my cosmetics/products/makeup were packed up and out of the way!!  So I did... I took everything off the shelves, out of the drawers, and out of the cupboards underneath my sinks.  I dusted like a mad woman, sneezed at least 20 times, and cleaned everything out with my favorite Clorox wipes.  Lemme just say... It's not everyday you will get a woman to show you a photo of the cupboard under her sink... But here it is:

After I was done with my bathroom, I was pretty proud of myself.  I had gone through products I didn't use, cold medicine that had expired, and lots of broken hair accessories.  That "to-do" was checked off my list and I was done!!  It felt so good, and as the trash bag slowly filled up with paper towel used for dusting and junk products, weight lifted from my shoulders.  I know that might sound crazy, but I swear I was de-cluttering my bathroom and my mind!!

As I was carrying my trash bag out, I caught sight of something that has bothered me for months now... DUST ON MY SHOES.  I have most of my shoes displayed in my closet, so they are exposed to dust constantly.  Some of the ones I had worn less had actually collected dust.  It really disgusted me, but during the school year I hadn't had enough time or energy to take all the shoes off the shelves and dust everything out.  But... My motivation was strong.  I had been cleaning for four hours... I could do a little more!!  So I broke out my Endust and paper towels and went to work.

Above is the view from my bathroom into my closet... I took every shoe and scarf out of that closet and went to work!!

It probably doesn't look like it took that much time, but I can assure you... It did.  I switched out my Fall/Winter shoes and replaced them with Spring/Summer ones (Spring has taken its time coming around this year so I've still been wearing some Winter shoes!!)  As I was switching out the shoes, I went through each pair and set aside ones I didn't wear for consignment.  I dusted and Clorox-ed each shelf!!  I even went through my scarves (you can see them hanging at the bottom).

The most difficult part was probably standing on a step-stool and dusting off the very top shelf.  It was hard to reach!!  I keep a few of my nicer Spring/Summer shoes up there, as well as two big pink bins for travel cosmetic cases.

Six and a half hours later... My bathroom closet, shelves, and cupboards were spotless... My shoes and scarves were stored neatly on their gleaming shelves... But most importantly, my mind felt totally cleared and lifted!!  I would recommend some deep Spring-cleaning to anyone with a free afternoon... If you feel as good as I did, you definitely won't regret the time it takes!!

Have you done any Spring-cleaning yet??  Did you notice that same de-cluttered feeling happening to yourself??

As always, yours... (just with less shoes and cosmetics!!)...

What Your Heart Wants...

"If you don't do what your heart wants you to do, it destroys you."
- Oprah Winfrey

At the end of every school year, people begin asking...

"What are you doing this summer?"
"Are you working?"
"Are you doing an internship?"
"Are you going to travel?"
"Where will you go on vacation?"
I've been putting off my answer until my plans were final, decided, 100% concrete.  Now that they are, I feel confident in telling anyone who asks, and of course, telling all of you.

Ever since I can remember, I would sketch dresses and handbags and shoes.  I still have scrawled pictures on little scraps of paper, random drawings on the back of school worksheets, and entire sketchbooks filled with my designs.  In high school, a guidance counselor (and my parents, to some extent) discouraged me from pursuing a career in fashion because it's an industry that is very competitive and somewhat unstable during poor economic times.  I put those dreams in the back of my mind, continued on to university, and finally went to law school.

What I don't want is to discourage anyone from going to law school, or say that law school as a whole is "disappointing" or "wrong".  It's not.  On the contrary, law school is an education that a law student will never, never regret.  Law school teaches a person how to think logically, how to analyze a situation, and how to push themselves past their limits and still survive.  I read in an article that over half of Fortune 500 CEO's have a legal education.  In short??  Making it through those "three years of Hell" will always be valuable.

About halfway through my first year of law school, I began to have doubts.  My desire to be involved in the fashion and beauty industry was stronger than ever, and I had realized that law school wasn't engaging me as much as I expected.  But I kept going, and the summer after my first year I had one of the best experiences of my entire life - a legal internship in Europe.  When I think of my time last summer I have difficulty not tearing up... I can't even describe to you how much I grew as a person, how much I learned, and how much that experience meant to me.  I had the best bosses, especially during my time in Italy... My boss took me under her wing, and taught me more than I had learned in an entire year of law school.

I came back to my law school for my second year, but that nagging feeling was still there.  I started to feel really sad... I wanted to find the career that ignited that passion inside of me, the kind of happiness that so many of my friends had found, even while studying for hours after a full day of classes.  I began to realize that it wasn't the four hours of sleep a night, stressing so much that I fainted, or waking up screaming from the pain of migraines... That would all be worth it if I was doing something I truly loved.  What bothered me was the fact that I was still searching for what I was supposed to do, what I was supposed to be.

Halfway through this year I started looking into a career in fashion.  When I called one of the top fashion schools, they told me that my legal education wouldn't count for any credit at their institution... I would have to start all over with undergraduate classes.  Talk about a stab through the heart... They were telling me that a B.A. in Psychology, minor in Legal Studies, and two years of law school were the equivalent of a high school diploma to them.  I felt angry and bitter... Was it worth going back that far?  Maybe a legal career was the right choice, even if I didn't love it?

I had an offer to come back and complete a second internship in Europe this summer.  As the school year neared its end, I knew I had to make a decision.  I loved working in Europe, living with my dad, and learning so much from such successful people.  But what I want, more than anything, is to graduate law school next year knowing exactly what I want to do next, whether it's taking the bar exam or continuing on to fashion school.  So, in April I made the difficult decision to sign up for Summer classes at the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC.  I want to learn more about the fashion industry, find out if I would love a career in fashion/beauty as much as I think I will, and discover if I possess the skills necessary for a successful career in fashion/beauty.

FIT is ranked #5 out of all fashion schools in the world.  After researching several schools, I chose FIT based on their emphasis on fashion business - marketing, merchandising, brand management, etc.  I am beyond thrilled to be able to take classes from them, and so very excited to see what fashion classes are like.  My first class is online and begins at the end of this month.  I take my second class in-person in NYC later this summer.  This week, my mom and I paid for my classes, ordered my books, booked my flights, and found a place for me to stay in NYC.  I even received one of my textbooks... And I took the fact that I immediately sat down and flipped through every page to be a good sign of things to come.  :)

I can't wait to take you along on this journey with me... I don't know what will happen, but I have a feeling there's a reason I haven't discovered my passion yet.

Skincare Routine

Someone left a comment requesting this video on my last YouTube video.  I thought it was a great idea for a video, and lately I've received several comments on photos or videos about my skin looking good, so I wanted to fill you in on the products I use and the routine I follow.

My skin is far from flawless, I truly think making any skin type look good is simply a mixture of products that work and utilizing cosmetics!!

Barnes & Noble Book Haul

There have been a few books mentioned in articles I've read that I've just been dying for... I had my chance at Barnes & Noble last week to stock up!!

Furious Love: Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, and the Marriage of the Century
by Sam Kashner & Nancy Schoenberger
$11.55 on Amazon... Click here:

Description (on back):  He was a tough-guy Welshman softened by the affections of a breathtakingly beautiful woman.  She was a modern-day Cleopatra madly in love with her own Mark Antony.  For nearly a quarter of a century, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton were Hollywood royalty, and their fiery romance - often called "the marriage of the century" - was the most notorious, publicized, and celebrated love affair of its day.
Shocking and unsparing in its honesty, Furious Love explores the very public marriage of "Liz and Dick" as well as the private struggles of Elizabeth and Richard.  But it is much more than a celebrity biography; it's an honest yet sympathetic portrait of a man, a woman, and a passion that shocked and mesmerized the world.

William and Kate: A Royal Love Story
by Christopher Andersen
$15.60 on Amazon... Click here:

Description (on back):  Theirs is the story of two young people who found each other in college, came perilously close to losing what they had forever, and pulled back from the brink at the last possible moment.  Theirs is the story of private moments stolen for public consumption, of harrowing car chases, of scorching personal dramas played out behind the scenes, of calm heads prevailing in times of panic, and of a singular devotion made stronger by time.  The saga of William and Kate is one thing above all else: a love story.

Kate Style: Chic and Classic Look
by Alisande Healy Orme
$13.57 on Amazon... Click here:
Kate Style: Chic and Classic Look

Description (on back):  Whether she's dressed for the country in sporty, top-to-toe tweed, attending a society function in a glamorous evening gown, or keeping it casual in jeans and her favourite knee-high boots, Kate always looks picture-perfect, effortlessly blending high-street chic with designer couture.  This book picks apart the seams of the Princess-to-be's coveted look; detailing her favourite shops and designers, surveying the shoes, bags and, of course, hats that form an essential part of Kate's wardrobe.  Kate Style: Chic and Classic Look reveals the secrets behind her glossy locks, flawless make-up, and elegant figure.

By now, you all are well aware that I'm slightly obsessed with anything royal/Princess Catherine... This book provides interesting insight into all her looks.  What I am most interested in is her seemingly never-ending collection of leather/suede knee-high boots AND how she styled her hair on the day she announced her engagement to make it so shiny and full.  :) I think she's gorgeous!!

Here is another Kate style-related book I am pre-ordering from Amazon.com (it will be shipped in early September):

Kate: Style Princess - The Fashion and Beauty Secrets of Britain's Most Glamorous Royal

by Sara Cywinski

Feather Addiction... Part 2

Okay, it got worse... My feather addiction has now progressed and is a full-blown obsession.  Last week I was at my salon for a nail appointment... And I decided I needed another set of feathers in my hair.  I had four (two brown, one teal, one ivory) and added another four (two teal, one light lavender, one purple).  I absolutely love them, especially when they are curled!!

Tonight I went to my cousin's ("little C") baseball game... Since I was seeing my family for the first time since Christmas I decided not to scare them away by looking like a serious hippie - see below - and simply curled my hair in loose waves.  :)

I think my family liked them, even though they teased me a bit... You look like Steven Tyler!!

I think I can see the resemblance... And I think I like it!!!

Do you remember my first post on feathers??  In it, I mentioned the option of buying a clip-in feather hair extension instead of getting the feathers fastened in your hair for 6 weeks or so.  Well, the example I showed you was just too fantastically full of feathers... I couldn't resist.  I bought it.

You can get these handmade clip-in feather extensions from Falling Feathers on etsy.com.  Visit her Etsy shop HERE.

After little C's ballgame we went to a restaurant for dinner.  And after that??  I had the privilege of picking big C up from his 8th grade Spring dance!!  He asked me if I would pick him up... I guess that means I'm still considered "cool"??  (I want this in print so someday my kids will believe me... I used to be cool!!)  He looked so cute, and he's getting so tall!!  He's as tall as me now :(

After I came home I decided to try on the Falling Feathers extension and show it to my "Twit-fam"  :)  Here are the photos I snapped with my phone...

The clip-in extension is really well-made... The feathers attach to the main part of the extension with tiny gold chains, and there's a little beaded strand with a charm that says "Live".  The whole extension clips into the hair with a comb-type flexible clip (the kind clip-in hair extensions fasten with... you bend it out to open it, push it closed to fasten it in).  The feathers are honestly the best quality I've seen, unlike most feathers that come attached to earrings or hair accessories.  I honestly didn't see a single feather that looked "bad"... They were all in perfect condition, shiny, and gleaming.  I would definitely order from Falling Feathers again... And I encourage you to do the same!!  :)

I don't know what it is about feathers this season... I am totally into this trend, and I'm going to rock it until it is completely ov-ahhh  :)

Peace, love, and feathers...

Congratulations to Kori!!!

Congratulations to Kori, at the fabulous blog, Blonde Episodes!!  After two years of working on her murder/mystery novel, it is finally done!!

blondeepisodes.com

Murder on the Boulevard can be purchased in e-book version via Amazon here: Murder On The Boulevard.  The paperback version can be bought at the same link in about a week.  Remember, if you have an iPad or an iPhone, you get Amazon's Kindle reader for free!!

Here's the description Amazon offers for this novel: Bobbi had always wanted to find Mr. Right. But, as a young, independent woman in her late 20's, Hollywood was probably not the right place to find him, especially in the 1950's. Just when she thinks she's found her Prince Charming, she gets involved in something sinister. Bodies are appearing all over town, and if she doesn't figure it out, she'll be the next murder victim...on the Boulevard.

Sounds pretty intriguing, right?!  I am my mother's daughter... I love old movies.  Cary Grant, Doris Day, Rock Hudson, Vivian Leigh, Shirley Temple, Audrey Hepburn... Swoon!!  After reading the book's description, I could just see the plot being carried out in black and white by a Grace Kelly-esque character in a tea-length dress!!  I can't wait to download the e-version of this book and see what happens!!

Congratulations on your novel, Kori!!  If your blog is any indication of your writing talent, it will be fantastic.  I can't wait to get started!!

My Summer To-Do List

Spring is one of the busiest times of my year... There's Spring Break, my birthday, and studying for finals.  Needless to say, "Spring cleaning" is the furthest from my mind during that time.  But when Summer comes, I finally have a chance to get started on my to-do list - all the things I haven't had time to do, all the things I've put off doing, and all the things I simply want to do!!

So here it goes... My Summer To-Do List!!

1.  Spend time with my cousins.
Throughout the school year I don't have much time to get home, and I always visit my parents wherever they are, so it doesn't always mean that I'll see my 2 youngest cousins each break.  They change so much each time I see them, so I can't wait to spend time with them this Summer and just get to enjoy them!!  They always make me laugh, and they are the sweetest little guys I know.

2.  Read the Twilight series.
I bought the first Twilight (The Twilight Saga, Book 1), never read it, and then saw each of the 3 movies as they came out.  Like almost every other woman on the planet, I drooled over Edward and Jacob (I am Team Jacob, I can't deny it).  My friend AW insisted that I borrow her copies of the remaining Twilight novels: New Moon (The Twilight Saga), Eclipse (The Twilight Saga), and Breaking Dawn (The Twilight Saga, Book 4).  My goal is to have read all four books before school starts, just in time for the newest Twilight movie - Breaking Dawn, Part I, to be released November 18th.

A still from Breaking Dawn - Part I

And it just wouldn't be a Twilight movie without Taylor Lautner  :)

3.  Learn French.
My dad gave me Rosetta Stone in French earlier this year.  My goal was to use it on the weekends, but between studying and reading for class, working out, and working on my blog, learning French was put on the back burner.  Now I have more free time, and I'll be able to use my Rosetta Stone and get to work on my French!!

4.  See more movies.
There are a few movies coming out this summer that look just amazing...  I can't wait to see them!!

Thor - May 6th
Perfect movie to take my cousins to!!

Bridesmaids - May 13th
Perfect movie to see with my mom and aunt!!

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - May 20th
Hmm... To go with my cousins, or go with my friends and drool over Johnny Depp??

The Hangover Part II - May 26th
The Hangover was one of the only movies that made me laugh hard, out loud, and nonstop in the theater... It was absolutely hilarious!!  I'd love to go with my dad if he's around, because we laughed through the entire movie together when we bought it on pay-per-view!!

Bad Teacher - June 24th
Maybe a good date movie??

Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows Part II - July 15th
This is my cousin's bday and I would love to take him to it!! Unfortunately, I won't be there, so I'm thinking movie date with my fellow Harry lover... SH??  :)

Friends With Benefits - July 22nd
Looks like another good date movie!!
5.  Get caught up on scrapbooking.
I adore scrapbooking, as I've probably mentioned before.  I love creating a way to document memories so I can look back on them over and over again.  I've gotten so behind... I think I've only gotten to the summer between my Sophomore and Junior year of undergrad, and I just finished my 2nd year of law school!!  Luckily, my mom hosts an all-girls' long-weekend of scrapbooking every Summer, and this year I'm able to go (last year I was interning in Europe).  I get so many pages done every time I go... I will keep you updated and maybe take some pics of the layouts I do while I'm there.

6.  Sell back my textbooks and study aids.
As you can imagine, the book list for law classes is never ending.  And usually, if I want to actually understand what I'm reading, I need a supplement or two for each class in addition to my textbooks.  So I have a lovely stack of law school books piled up in the back of my car... And they need to go online and be sold!!

7.  Put some dresses and shoes on eBay and consignment.
I am notorious for hanging onto things that don't fit me or that don't look right on me; I will just keep them for years!!  As I was packing up for a couple weeks at home with my family, I went through some clothes and shoes.  The few things left over from my blog sale, combined with the things I packed up at my house amount to a BIG box that needs to be taken to consignment or sold on eBay.  It's a task that I don't like taking the time to do during the school year, but in the Summer I have no choice... I can't be lazy!!

Okay... She might even have more of a problem hanging onto clothes than I do!!

8.  Film more videos and write more blog posts.
I love blogging and filming videos... It brightens my day, and allows me a little creative release.  I enjoy it even if I have the guilt of needing to study and read for class hanging over my head... But if I don't feel that pressure, I'm able to film and write posts more frequently and put a little more detail into them!!

9.  Clean out my bathroom closet and drawers.
Towels, makeup, bath products, self tanning supplies, medicine, band-aids, and extra products are essentials, right?!  But over the school year the shelves have gotten a little cluttered, not to mention dusty.  It is a significant task to remove everything from the shelves, go through it, and dust out each shelf.  But it's also a necessary task... This Summer, I need to force myself to clean out my bathroom closet, drawers, and the cupboards under the sink.  I will probably need you all to cross your fingers for me while I'm doing it!!  Ugh...

This counter is even worse than mine... But this is what I feel like when I attempt to clean out my bathroom closet/drawers/cupboards!!

Do you have a Summer to-do list??  What things are you hoping to get done this Summer??

Happy Friday!!

Xoxo B.
